Terms of Service

Last updated: 4 July 2026

OpenDeck is free, open-source software and an open file format. There is no paid service, no account, and no subscription — so these terms are short, because there is very little to agree to.

Summary

  • OpenDeck is free and open source; you use it under its open-source licenses.
  • There is no account, no hosted service, and no fees — the software runs on your own device.
  • The software is provided “as is,” without warranty. You are responsible for how you use it and for the decks you create or open.

What OpenDeck is

“OpenDeck” refers to a set of freely available things: a website (this site), a player application (on the web and as native apps for macOS, iOS, iPadOS, Windows, and Android), an authoring kit, and the open .deck file format. OpenDeck is a tool you run, not a service we operate on your behalf. We do not host your presentations, we have no backend that processes your content, and we hold no account or data about you (see our Privacy Policy).

Acceptance

By using the OpenDeck website, applications, authoring kit, or format, you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, please do not use them. Where you obtain OpenDeck through a third-party channel (for example an app store), that channel’s terms also apply to your download and use.

License — how OpenDeck is provided

OpenDeck is released under standard open-source licenses, and those licenses — not this page — are the authoritative grant of your rights to the software and format:

  • The player application is licensed under the Apache License 2.0.
  • The authoring kit is licensed under the MIT License.
  • The .deck format and its schema are dedicated to the public domain under CC0 — anyone may implement, read, or write it without permission.

You are free to use, copy, modify, and distribute the software in accordance with those licenses. Nothing in these terms limits the rights granted to you by them. The current license texts are published in the project repositories at github.com/open-deck-org.

No account, no hosted service, no fees

OpenDeck does not require you to register, sign in, or pay. It does not run a subscription or store your work in the cloud. The web version runs locally in your browser, and the native apps run on your device. Because there is no service to operate, there is nothing for us to suspend, and no uptime or availability is promised.

Your decks and content

You own the presentations, media, and other content you create, import, or open with OpenDeck. We claim no rights over them and never receive a copy — your content stays on your device. You are solely responsible for the content of the decks you create and for how you share them, including ensuring you have the rights to any material you include and that your use complies with applicable law.

A .deck is a self-contained HTML document. Treat a deck from an untrusted source the same way you would any file from a stranger: OpenDeck runs deck content in a sandboxed environment, but you should still only open decks you trust.

AI-assisted authoring

Creating a deck with the authoring kit uses a third-party AI model that you supply or connect. Your use of any such model or provider is governed by that provider’s own terms, and you are responsible for your prompts and for reviewing what is generated. OpenDeck does not guarantee that generated content is accurate, original, or fit for any particular purpose. Playing a finished deck needs no AI and no network connection.

Acceptable use

Don’t use OpenDeck to do anything unlawful, to infringe others’ rights, or to create or distribute decks containing malware or content you are not permitted to share. Don’t remove or misrepresent license or attribution notices in the software.

Name and logo

The OpenDeck source code and format are open, but the OpenDeck name and logo identify the project. You may refer to OpenDeck accurately (for example, “built with OpenDeck” or “compatible with the .deck format”), but please don’t use the name or logo in a way that suggests official endorsement of, or affiliation with, a product that isn’t ours.

Third-party services and stores

The native apps are distributed through third-party stores (Apple App Store, Mac App Store, Microsoft Store, Google Play), and this site may link to third-party sites such as GitHub. Those services are operated by others under their own terms and privacy policies, which apply to your use of them.

Disclaimer of warranties

OpenDeck is provided “as is” and “as available,” without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including but not limited to implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. We do not warrant that the software will be error-free or uninterrupted. This mirrors the disclaimers in the open-source licenses above.

Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, the authors and contributors of OpenDeck shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or exemplary damages, or for any loss of data or content, arising out of or relating to your use of (or inability to use) OpenDeck. Because OpenDeck is provided free of charge, our total liability to you for any claim is limited to the amount you paid for it — which is nothing.

Changes to these terms

If these terms change, the updated version will be posted at this address with a new “Last updated” date. Continued use after a change means you accept the revised terms.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of Bulgaria, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. Nothing here removes any mandatory consumer-protection rights you have under the laws of your own country.
